Room is an independent student publication out of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of British Columbia. Each issue of the annual digest explores a different distinguishable room and challenges its boundaries and demarcations, both material and immaterial.
For its inaugural issue, Room will be exploring the Bathroom. 2017 marks the passing of one century since Duchamp’s Fountain was first showcased. The piece’s now-cliché status belies the fact that in the century since its exhibition, the space of the bathroom—along with its associated paraphernalia—has retained the stigma as that which is auxiliary or subordinate to rooms of greater significance.
Despite this view, the bathroom has set the stage for some of the most public struggles and celebrations of social and cultural identity in the past one hundred years. Complexities and contradictions of the bathroom including questions of privacy and publicness, cleanliness and dirtiness, the high and the low, and the ritualistic and the mundane will be fleshed out and interrogated.
Deadline: October 31st 2017 23:59:00 (Pacific Time, UTC-7).
The co-disciplinary platform asks its contributors to reflect and meditate on the bathroom through the production of new writings, photographs, drawings and any other forms of visual representation.
Possible topics may include those that examine the bathroom through the lens of gender, sexuality, or race, or through art or design at any scale, from the faucet to the sewer system.
